Many startup independent shops tend to come and go, often struggling and not even seeing their first anniversary. Not the case for Urban Custom Bikes onPacific HwyinFife,WAwhere business is booming (pun intended) as they celebrated their one year anniversary this past July. What a party it was!
Approaching Urban Customs, you couldn’t help but notice the large Drag Specialties tent and trailer, that you typically only see at major bike events, parked besides Urban’s building. Under the tent, representatives from Drag Specialties were on hand to answer questions on some of their newest and hottest available catalog products. On display were items such as exhaust systems by Super Trap, Bassani, Vance & Hines and Python, tires by Dunlop, Metzeler, Pirelli and Avon, sound systems by Hogtunes, and so much more from add-ons for your bike to riding clothing and helmets. There were all kinds of product literature, stickers and swag from various manufacturers to be had, as well as Drag Specialties catalogs on CD, all for free!
Rick Battistini from Battistini’s Custom Cycles was showing off their unique line of bike accessories – floorboards, forward controls and pegs, hand controls and grips, dash accessories and more! They even had a tricked-out H-D Street Glide dressed up with all their latest products on display.
Urban held a two day tire sale during their anniversary celebration featuring Dunlop, Metzeler, Michelin, Pirelli, &Avontires, and the purchase of any tires included free installation! I was in need of new rubber and didn’t hesitate one bit when Urban’s Jeremy Ruse told me he could get my bike in the shop, right then and there! In fact, two other friends opted to get rubber replaced during the Anniversary Party as well. The service area at Urban was hopping all day long and every lift always had a bike on it. Bike after bike rolled out of the service doors and was promptly washed before being handed back over to the customer.
A DJ made sure the tunes were thumping all day in the parking lot, only pausing for a few minutes every hour for Urban’s Jessica Ruse to give away handfuls of swag. Vendor row was lively and busy amidst the nearby music. The vendors included Tatt Time fromRochester, Forever Powder Coating fromOlympia, Patch Lady Diane, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, and Paint by Gene, who does much of the paintwork for Urban. Party guests who held out until the end of the day were treated to a wheelie show onPacific Highwayby Lorenzo Marr on his customized and tricked-out red2010 H-D RoadKing. If you’ve never seen a wheelie being performed on a touring bike with hard bags, it’s a sight to behold.
