The Big Cover Up

In December of each year – two Motorcycle Clubs (MC’s):  The Messengers & The Pioneers put on an incredible event in San Diego that directly benefits two organizations– Brother Benno’s in Oceanside, and St. Vincent De Paul in San Diego who both minister to the homeless throughout the year.  During this time of year, it gets especially difficult to meet all of the needs that the cold winter brings.

So 22 Years ago, the two MC’s got together on a joint mission, and the “Big Cover Up” began. It has been a huge blessing to both Brother Benno’s & St. Vincent De Paul’s.

For the first 20 years the event started in San Diego and ended at Kennedys Custom Cycles in Oceanside. And various MC’s, Riding Clubs, Social Clubs, Motorcycle Ministries and many independent riders rolled in from all over San Diego, Orange County, and the Inland Empire to attend the event. It was and it continues to be a real biker event.  The Messengers & the Pioneers MC’s know how to throw an awesome party!

Last year a schedule conflict kept the event entirely at San Diego Harley-Davidson. This year because of some unfortunate struggles trying to work with the City of Oceanside, the event could not end at Kennedys, so again took place entirely at San Diego H-D.  Both The Messengers and the Pioneers MC’s would like to thank New York Myke and San Diego H-D, John of “Five Loaves and Two Fishes” who fed all the hungry bikers, Snowman from the Boozefighters MC, the entire Kennedys Custom Cycles family, all of the members of the San Diego Confederation of Clubs, and so many others for their tireless support for so many years.

This time over five hundred motorcycles rolled onto the lot at San Diego H-D from all over Southern California bringing blankets, clothing and cash to help support the charity ride.  Snowman donated a truckload of sleeping bags, and Law Tigers Motorcycle Injury Lawyers as well as Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys each made cash donations.

There were quite a few vendors including: Torraine Customs, San Diego Customs, Moto Pockets, Al’s Collectibles, and more.  “Bull” of the Pioneers MC did the honors as both emcee and DJ, spinning tunes for the crowd.  An incredible wheelie & burnout exhibition was put on by the “SD No Name Stunt Guyz” and they had the crowd cheering.  At the end of the day, the event collected a total of $2,000 and two large truckloads of blankets, socks, sleeping bags and other warm items to be distributed between the two charities.

Plans are already in the works for next year’s Big Cover Up with the clubs talking together about – “The Ride” starting at Kennedys and ending in the massive parking lot at San Diego Harley.  Here’s a quote from Pioneers MC member “Doit”:  “We do this to support our fellow man, who may be in a less fortunate time in their lives, and 0% goes to our clubs, all proceeds and donations go directly to the two organizations we support.”

The Messengers & the Pioneers MC’s would like to send out a “Very Heartfelt Thank You” to everyone who participated and donated to this awesome charity event. Let’s keep this amazing annual event going, and make it even bigger next year!
