An estimated 4,000 bikers converged in Ocean Shores, WA the weekend of July 25th-28th to check out the 25th Annual Sun and Surf Run. This longtime event has remained a must-do mainstay event for the vast majority who attend. Of course every year, Sun and Surf attracts hundreds of new faces as well.
I met and spoke with people from all over Washington, Oregon, California and a few from Canada while I was checking out all of the festivities at the Convention Center in town.
Riders gathered at the Convention to check out what’s happening, to support this great longtime charity event, to mingle and be seen.
The entire Convention Center parking lot was jam packed with bikes and people. They were checking out the vendor area which was filled with a variety of great vendors selling everything from motorcycles, riding gear, rubber ducky’s for kids, ladies wear, jewelry and an array of food. I noticed that Northwest H-D’s booth was extremely busy throughout the entire weekend, along with Love Leathers Outpost and Bent Bike. Everyone I spoke with was raving about the food vendors. This year Sun and Surf had set up some tables and chairs in the food vendor area giving tired riders a place to sit and enjoy their meal.
There were so many activities for riders to participate in or to kick back and observe; either way it was guaranteed fun. The Westcoast Connection Hollywood B Extreme Stunt Riders put on several shows drawing enormous crowds. The Seattle Cossacks and the Tenino Drill Team also performed; they always draw a huge crowd as they are all local fellows who are well respected and extremely talented.
There was a silent auction, a blessing of the bikes, a lively and fun biker babe contest, a tattoo contest, a massive ride-In bike show, a poker run, bike games hosted by South Sound HOG, firemen’s breakfast and lots of live music throughout the weekend!
Two bands, Sons of Palmer and James King and the Southsiders, played on the outdoor stage by the beer garden which was hosted by Galway Bay Irish Pub. The Pub donated 10% of their proceeds back to Sun and Surf. On Saturday night “Too Slim and the Tail Draggers” played for the big Sun & Surf party in the convention center.
Sun and Surf is the kind of event that year after year, you can always count on running into lots of friends and familiar faces. The social aspect is a large part of what draws riders here.
The Sun and Surf Run is all about charity – the money they raise benefits several important causes such as the Boyer Children’ Clinic, Seattle Children’s Hospital, North Beach PAWS, Guide Dogs Of America, and more local charities.
Registration for the event was only $20 if you pre-registered online or $25 if you registered onsite. If you didn’t register, then shame on you. An estimated 4000 riders attended Sun & Surf and yet 1546 riders registered?
Riders who attend fill every hotel, motel, condo, and rental home in and near Ocean Shores to capacity despite the increased room rates that weekend. Several riders I know have gone as far as purchasing property at the ocean just because they attend this event year and they love the area.
Every bar and restaurant in the area is packed to capacity that weekend putting thousands of dollars into their cash registers. How many of those establishments made a donation to Sun and Surf? So far the answer is NONE.
It is important that everyone who enjoys Sun and Surf remembers that it is a charity event. The Sun and Surf Committee works hard year round putting this event together. They incur a great deal of costs to insure that the riders have a great time and come back year after year. For example they pay nearly $6000 for use of the convention center, plus they pay the bands, stunt teams, etc.
If you were one of the 1546 riders who registered – Thank you. If you didn’t, do the right thing next year and pre-register or pull $25 out of your wallet when you arrive and register onsite.
After the event came to an end the Sun and Surf committee had this to say, “We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the 25th Annual Sun and Surf Run. Special thanks go to all of the 2013 sponsors: Northwest H-D, Ramada Ocean Shores, Quality Inn, Galway Bay Irish Pub, Quality Inn Hotel, Ocean Shores Inn & Suites, IAM #751, and Microsoft. We look forward to seeing everyone next year and continuing our charity mission.”
