Quick Throttle Magazine Expo 2007

2nd Annual Totally-Biased Review by CD & Lisa Dalgaard Pics By Pete Alva, Oso, Mikes Sayer, Randy Twells and Linda Dahl

Sun, Fun, Bikes, Music, and (one of my favorite things to do) Shopping. That’s why almost 4,000 attendees came to the 2nd Annual Quick Throttle Expo on St. Patty’s Day weekend, March 17th and 18th.

Ok so, this was the Quick Throttle Expo and I know what you’re thinking, “Of course they are going to say their event was the event of the year!” Well, there are many other great events throughout the year but for this St.Patty’s Day weekend, we have to admit, it was the place to be. When was the last time you saw a real live Leprechan with a real pot o’ gold? Kids and adults alike were waiting in line for their candy gold coin and photo op, and chance to win the Harley!

Each day started with the amazing Bob Seger tribute band, Sam Morrison, and ended with the incredible all-girl AC/DC tribute, ThundHERStruck. Girls singing AC/DC you say? Oh yeah, and these girls rocked the house. Even hardcore AC/DC fans agreed, that they are by far the best AC/DC tribute band around today. In between the bands we had the folks from Jack FM and Wahoo’s sponsor a game booth with giveaways and great music all day Saturday.

Music was great but the shopping was even better. With over 100 vendors there, it was like a Biker Shopping Mall. Leathers, clothes, jewelry, kids motorcycle stuff, parts, wheels, pipes and bikes, mostly bikes. Our sponsors Orange County Harley-Davidson and Thunder Mountain Customs brought a ton of incredible bikes out and several of you even made them your own that day. Amazingly enough, many of you who read Quick Throttle don’t have a bike yet. If that’s you, this month is the time to buy a motorcycle. You know the new lines start making there appearances midsummer so when do you think the dealers are wheelin’ and dealin? March – June of course. Just in time for you to ride in that warm summer sun. I’ve seen $99 down with 0% interest. You cannot beat that. Unless of course you are Street Beat, the percussion performers who played several Stomp-type performances throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday. These guys played percussion with motorcycle parts and were unbelievable.

Their energy level was almost as high as the very lucky (or blessed) Dave Boatright, a member of the Soldiers for Jesus MC, who just bought a ticket to the Expo and walked away with a Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom. Dave got the answer to his prayers of a new motorcycle on that Sunday, while nearly chocking on his popcorn while hearing his name called as the raffle winner. He also won his very own custom paint job courtesy of Rock N’ Roll Custom Paints!

A Sportster’s nice, especially when it’s free, but if you were looking for a custom ride, Discovery Channel custom bike builders Todd Silicato, Travelen and Tom Foster had some creations that folks were drooling over. These guys are amazingly talented and if you haven’t seen their stuff, you need to check out future issues of Quick Throttle to catch a glimpse of their genius work. You may have to have yourself a custom bike along with your main H-D ride.

So, maybe you’re not on Discovery Channel yet but if you entered your bike into our world-class Bike Show sponsored by Bikernet.com, you were probably pretty famous that weekend. Bandit knows bikes and this time, he picked some great winners. Trophies were a world class photo of you and your creation by our very own Pete Alva and set on a QT Cover, in a gorgeous, one of a kind frame (if you didn’t get yours yet, it’s a comin’.)

Now, we heard the St. Patty’s Day green beer was overpriced and the food was a bit high also, and not the best quality. We want you to know that the pricing is something we can’t control (and don’t make money on) but next year, we plan to make them provide better food vendors, and we WILL put pressure on to lower the costs. We were proud of the FREE parking though and we hope that may have offset the other costs somewhat. We know Bikers hate paying for parking!

So what’s a Quick Throttle event without a Miss QT Contest right? These ladies won some real money, and even though several models never showed up (shocker), these girls who came out of the crowd (or in the case of the winner, Stella Yin, the So. Cal. Victory booth) didn’t disappoint us!

Stella had an impressive resume too – motorcycle rider, helicopter pilot, and one hot lady. You got a chance to preview those ladies during the Bad Pig Fashion Show where we saw fashions by all the vendors displaying at the Expo with special features by Brian at Bad Pig.com. Thanks for putting on a great shown Brian.

And no contest or event would have been the same without Dan Leadbetter on the mic, as our Master of Ceremonies. Dan, who usually works at Lifestyle Cycles in Anaheim, was a real workhorse and never failed to inform and entertain. Best of all, when he didn’t have the information at hand, he faked it! Way to go, Dan, you’re our kinda guy!

Orange Coast HOG Chapter won the $500 chapter challenge this year, followed closely by chapters from Pomona Valley H-D, Anaheim-Fullerton and Westminster! Thanks so much for the support guys.

As always, we want to thank Seth and Spike from Horsepower Promotions for working with us again this year. They run the show during the event and make sure everything goes as scheduled. Horsepower has produced such notable events as the Hot Bike Shows and All-American Motorcycle Madness and now, a little event called HOLLISTER, so don’t miss that one this year!

A big thanks go to all the vendors for their support too. This event was always MEANT to be vendor-focused, as it’s a “season opener” and a chance to gear up for the summer. We appreciate the ones who signed on with us months ahead, as well as those who called a week in advance, and asked for a discount!  We know they all got their money’s worth, as you all supported them with your business.

We want to thank the Bikers for Christ and the Soldiers for Jesus for helping out with Security. As you all know, these guys are always a class act, and will courteously point you in the right direction. Many of them also have some heavy life stories to tell, and have survived the “dark side” of the old Biker lifestyle. Some real inspirational stuff if you ever have the time to check out a meeting.

Thanks of course goes to our Staff, who we have grudgingly shared a few dollars with, darn crumbsnatchers! These guys and girls really did work hard, and they thought they were working for free, so we sure do appreciate them.

Though we can’t call him “Staff” without him getting mad, we want to thank my Dad, Mike Dalgaard, Northwest Editor of QT, for coming all the way down here and helping out with the event. He really did work tirelessly the whole weekend (probably ‘cause he’s in better shape than his kid) and even had a smart idea now and then. Guess he’s not ready for the old folk’s home just yet. Love ya, Pop!

Most of all, we want to THANK YOU all for coming out to the Expo, for making year 2 of this event so much better. We promise, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Thanks also for making us the largest FREE V-Twin motorcycle magazine in the country in our 6th year.

Hope to see you all next year!
