On Saturday June 27th Moon Motorcycles in Issaquah WA held their official Grand Opening Celebration! As I rounded the bend on Poplar Way, the street that their shop is located on, motorcycles and cars were parked all along the curb. As I approached the shop I soon saw that their parking lot was jam packed with bikes hence the overflow parking all up and down the street!
I was quite impressed with such a huge turnout for this gathering. It’s not often that you see a turnout like that at a new independent shops grand opening. In addition, I need to mention that it was scorching hot, somewhere in the mid 90’s. So getting people to hop on their bikes and then hop off their bikes and hang out was quite a testament to the following that this family owned business has established right from the get go.
As I made my way to the nice sized area behind the main building I was greeted by the smell of smoked barbecue and some great classic rock by the High Street Band which created a high energy, fun vibe. The shop was packed with a great variety of sparkling inventory – cruisers, metrics, and dual sports by manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Buell, Honda, BMW, Suzuki, Yamaha and Aprilla!
I couldn’t help but notice that the crowd was a nice blend of every type of rider and everyone in the crowd meshed very well together. I saw Harley guys checking out BMR’s, I saw metric riders checking out Harley’s, I heard kids talking about which bikes were their favorites and which one they were going to buy when they grow up. There was no posing and no posturing; it was just a good ol’ fashioned family motorcycle event!
Throughout the day the excitement never wavered as Leslie, Scott and their daughter, Elly handed out several great door prizes such as – a free oil change, kid’s motorcycle toys, t-shirts, and 5 of Leslie’s original pieces of art, and the grand prize – a brand new CY50A Scooter!
Although it was hot, they were prepared with plenty of ice chests full of ice cold water and soda pop; and for those that were hungry Moon Motorcycles provided one of the tastiest homemade complimentary barbecue lunches that I’ve had in a while.
Moon Motorcycles is owned by Scott & Leslie Moon. Scott’s name probably sounds familiar if you’ve been riding any length of time. Scott has been riding bikes since he was a kid and has been employed in the motorcycle industry almost all of his life. When Scott was 10 years old he got his first bike and was hooked! He started racing when he was 13 and when he turned 14 the guys at Tommy’s Honda on 102nd and Aurora gave him a job (since he hung out there constantly) putting new motorcycles together right out of the crate. Over the next 20 years he worked at Seattle Honda, Lynnwood Honda and Renton Honda Kawasaki Suzuki Polaris. Scott says of that time “I was so lucky to be able to do what I love, working in a motorcycle shop every day and motocross or road racing nearly every weekend!” Then in 1995 he got his big break and was hired to race a sportster 883 in the super twins class For Eastside Harley! That quickly morphed into a job selling Harley-Davidson’s where he went on to work for the Thompson family for the next 20 years, until his departure in Dec ember of 2014. However, Scott’s journey in the industry was far from over; if anything a brand new road of success was on the horizon with the opening of Moon Motorcycles! Or as he likes to say “The opening of our family owned shop is like putting the cherry on top of my career!”
His wife Leslie is no stranger to motorcycles either. In 1995 she moved to Seattle from Philladelphia with a plan to attend UW in Fine Art/printmaking. Within a month of living here she took the Evergreen Safety Councils motorcycle class. She passed the class and immediately headed to Aurora Suzuki and bought herself a 250 rebel. A year later she tried road racing with WMRRA but it just wasn’t her thing. On the bright side, that is how she met Scott.
The two married in 1998. In 2001 their twins, Elly and Trevor were born. Their son Trevor was diagnosed with autism and because his needs were so great Leslie pretty much stopped riding. Something as simple as a broken wrist would make caring for their son very difficult. Over the years whenever it was possible Leslie would ride on the back with Scott. Leslie, a talented artist, did find a way to incorporate motorcycles into her art by creating many motorcycle related woodcuts and linocuts.
Their daughter Elly shares the family’s passion for bikes too. Scott started Elly out on a PW50 when she was five years old and she started racing motocross shortly after. She’s now an energetic, pretty, 14 year old young lady who has already had 10 different motorcycles!
Their son Trevor loves motorcycles too and he is quite happy when he gets to go riding in the sidecar perched right next to his Dad. Leslie said, “Early on Trevor would always take a stuffed toy with him, usually a bird, and he would hold it like the bird was flying along next to the motorcycle. It only took a few times of him letting go of the bird and having it come to rest on the side of the road before they wised up and learned to tie it to the sidecar!”
